The Workplace Tragedy Family Support Group is both a support group
and a campaign organisation. Most of us have lost loved ones and know
first hand the deep grief and suffering caused by workplace accidents -
in particular, grief caused by workplace fatalities. We believe that our losses place us in a unique position to provide comfort and support to others who find themselves in this tragic situation.
Our Convenor is Cheryl Romer, a schoolteacher and widow of Bob Romer, who was killed at work at the age of 43 years.
Our aims are to campaign for improved OH&S and workplace laws. We believe workers and their representatives should have more rights to ensure the workplace is safe.
Our aims include:
| 1. | To develop a kit for families of workplace tragedy victims, to advise them on how to proceed through the legal and industrial minefields whilst suffering such intense grief; | |
| 2. | To assist families of those who have also been badly injured at work; | |
| 3. | To increase workplace and public awareness about the extent and consequences of workplace accidents; | |
| 4. | To campaign with other community groups, including trade unions, for improved workplace OH&S and workplace laws: | |
| a. | Greater government monitoring of OH&S practices, particularly where the Government is the client; | |
| b. | Transparency in respect to workplace accidents, so that all of the information about the death and circumstances surrounding it is provided to families by all of the relevant authorities involved in the processing and reporting of a workplace death; | |
| c. | Protection for workers from unfair dismissal; | |
| d. | Enhanced right of entry laws for union officials investigating workplace safety. | |
| e. | Greater compensation to the victims of workplace accidents and their families. | |
We can’t bring back our own loved ones, but we certainly can fight to ensure all workers are able to come home at night.
